Cool Stuff: Has Doomsday Been Postponed For Another Year?

This next post is an example of the extreme cool stuff that scientists will go to further the cause of technology information.

If you haven’t yet heard, the Large Hadron Collider in Cern, Switzerland has been shut down until the Spring of 2009 due to technical issues. Liquid Helium spilled into the the 27km-long tunnel after magnets unexpectedly heated up from their normal (-271C; -456F). The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which cost a whopping $13 plus billion to build, was created to test the events moments after the big bang, by smashing protons together at very high speeds .

There are some who fear that theĀ  LHC will set off a chain reaction that will create a black hole, sucking the earth and the cosmos in. Scientists on the other hand are stating that these tests are perfectly safe. The conditions they are creating are already common events of nature, and the LHC will simply allow us to collect data in a controlled environment. If you like cool stuff, tell everyone that you can find it here.

There will always be scientists who would do anything to accomplish desired experiment and at the same time, there will always be some people, scarred to death over the matters, we have no control over…

Conditions that the LHC will create are not identical to nature, most importantly nature does not create slow moving micro black holes on Earth, the LHC might (cosmic ray impacts generate near light speed results, head-on colliders create some slow moving results).[1]

daria369, we do have some control over these experiments. We could chose to wait until the forces are better understood and we could proceed slowly, increasing enery in small amounts as proposed by astrophysicist Dr. Habil. Rainer Plaga.

My vote… thank god! People are always messing around with stuff better left alone. When my son told me about this I was royally p___ that they would even contemplate attempting such a thing. Never tried before, and what we all might suffer just because “let’s try this!” People can be such idiots. I’m all for science, but a conscience with science is what they should be striving for… I know some will think I’m paranoid, but that’s okay by me! Hope “let’s try again next year” never comes for them!

daria369 , JTankers & Diane Scott,

thanks for you comments. I must agree, scientists should be listening to the concerns of the people. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be happening here and it is disconcerting.
