Beach Belly Revenge

Looks like this dude didn’t count on the revenge of his big belly, as it spans across his lap, crashing onto the table and creating a domino effect that knocks his pal off his chair. Although this video is most likely part of a commercial or movie, it’s still damn funny.

That said, there are some of you out there that think poking fun at someone’s weight is at best, unkind and at worst a form of prejudice. No doubt that being made fun of because of your weight is no laughing matter. Being overweight isn’t fun, and people who are severely overweight have undoubtedly felt the stigma that society puts them. That said, the image isn’t about poking fun at people’s obesity, but a conscious decision by the individual to poke fun at himself. That is a very different matter altogether. We should remember that it is only offensive if the person in question finds it offensive and it’s clear that the man in the image is OK with his weight and has no issues poking fun at himself and I for one find nothing wrong with it, because we as people should not be prevented having a little fun, even if it is at our own expense, and to prohibit society from using specific images because of an over-sensitivity to a specific issue is censorship.

Actually the video smacks of fat hate. Using fat bodies for comedic purposes is othering.

Hey Renee,

I think the word hate is a little strong here. Since the actor is clearly a willing participant in the video I don’t see any problem with it, as the saying goes “as long as it’s done between consenting adults” . I think the real danger is when we as a society attempt to homogenize all images, thoughts and behaviors to the point where people start fearing their own individuality, stop being themselves, and start demanding the same of others.

Thanks for your comments

Using fat bodies for comedic purposes is hilarious.

If you don’t like it, go for a jog.
