They are a member of their own family – Hyaenidae. Second, these animals are hugely misunderstood. They are very intelligent and they are primarily hunters (although they will steal kills from lions, just as lions will steal from hyenas), not scavengers. The spotted hyena is the largest of all, and their societies are female dominated. Anyway, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to these powerful and beautiful animals.
