Hey Jack and Philip,

I agree with both of you, this requires a lot of cooperation. I wouldn't want to be a tourist driving in that. :-)

Incredible. From what I can see, the cooperation required to make an intersection like that work is phenomenal. It would never work in the US. What does that say about Americans?

I guess the people who live there are used to it, but what about someone who wasn't born there and now has to drive in that disaster?

Ding and Marc, thanks for your comments.

Ding, you're right, I would have to be born there to understand. But this isn't an issue of cultural ignorance, but a detached view on what I consider dangerous. :-)

Marc, If you were watching the video closely you would have noticed that there were numerous times when vehicles and pedestrians came inches from colliding. at the 35 second mark on the lower right, the man carrying the bag was almost pancaked between two vehicles.
This is all in a span of a couple of minutes.
But just to give you the benefit of the doubt, I have done some research to find out if you are right, and that North American model is too restrictive. The information I found does not look good.

There is an interesting article on the BBC website outlining the perils of driving in India. Here's a direct quote "In 2006 - the latest year for which figures are available - more than 100,000 people died, and an estimated 2,000,000 were seriously injured." This is the total number for India. The stats don't even cover the total number of accidents but only the ones that resulted in death and serious injury, which is scary. I stand by my post, Indian roads are dangerous.

Normal traffic, notice how people slow down and actually wait? they also make better use of their horns to alert other traffic of their intent. try learning about other traffic situations (besides the heavily restricted US style intersections) before you pass judgement about how dangerous this is.
