Firefox EasterEgg: About Robots - “Gort! Klaatu Barada Nikto!”

Firefox 3.0 seems to be carrying on the traditions of its predecessors by giving its users special surprises called Easter eggs. Here’s one that will make you happy.

1. Type into the Firefox address bar the following: about:robots and press enter.
2. You will get a message from Gort the robot as follows:

Welcome Humans!

We have come to visit you in peace and with goodwill!

*   Robots may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

*    Robots have seen things you people wouldn’t believe.

*    Robots are Your Plastic Pal Who’s Fun To Be With.

*    Robots have shiny metal posteriors which should not be bitten.

And they have a plan.

Firefox’s robot is taken from the 1951 movie ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’. If you look closely, at the Firefox tab, you will see the phrase “Gort! Klaatu Barada Nikto!”. This is a phrase used by Helen Benson(a character in the movie) to de-activate the robot Gort from escalating violence. So it is more of a command than a description, which in essence suggests that we are safe in the presence of Gort, the robot.
