The Kings Walkway(Caminito del Rey): Mountain Pathway
Looking like something straight out of a Lord Of The Rings movie, the mountain pathway in El Chorro, near Málaga, Spain isn’t for those who fear heights. Construction on this marvel started in 1901 and was finished four years later in 1905. It was built as a link between Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls for ‘transport of materials, vigilance and maintenance of the channel’.
In an extreme state of disrepair, the walkway was closed off by the Andalusian Government after a series of accidents left 4 dead in 1999 & 2000. As the video shows, the walkway is missing handrails for most of the path and concrete flooring has become brittle and collapsed with steel beams exposed. There is a safety line that walkers can latch onto.
The good news is that the Spanish Government has approved restoration of Caminito del Rey, which should allow those of us without a death wish to explore this fantastic place.
