File extensions are the letters after the dot in a file that helps the operating system launch the correct program. In the case of an File Extension ID, it is usually associated with Lotus Notes’ Domino Server. Windows file associations are important in order for your computer to work properly, but on occasion a registry corruption occurs that prevents you from properly launching the correct program with a specific file
ID file extensions are generally used by the Lotus Notes’ Domino Server to identify registered users on the Lotus Notes server. User information like name, email address, passwords, security certificate and so on. If Lotus Notes is not installed on your system, then the File Extension ID will not launch and attempting to open it up with another program like notepad will just generated unreadable information that is not useful outside of Lotus application and can even corrupt the data in the .id file which is something you’ll want to avoid at all costs.
Generally, the best way to resolve issues with file association issues is to manually instruct Windows to associate the file for you. There are obvious problems with this method, including knowing which executable program you should be associating the file with. Another option is to reinstall the Lotus software and hope that it will recreate program associations. One method that should be avoided unless you know what you’re doing is to tamper with the Windows Registry because bad things can happen, including messing up your Windows OS. The best solution, for most people, is to purchase third part software that will fix the file extension id issue for you.
