File Extension WMV is an acronym for the words Windows Media Video and is used Microsoft Windows Media Player. More often than not, the wmv file extension is wrapped in a Advanced Systems Format (ASF) and the File Extension WMV is a descriptor of ASF files that use  Windows Media Video codecs.

Like many media file types, the File Extension WMV is stored in a compressed format until Windows Media player opens the file for use. When you double click on a file with a File Extension WMV, Windows will know exactly which program to use to open the wmv file. But what happens on occasion is that the registry becomes corrupted, and therefore Windows is unable to correctly open the wmv file format.
