Burning DVD’s is a very simple matter for most people, but many are still confused with all the different terminology that exists regarding DVD Media. Whether you are trying to copy an AVI movie into a readable DVD or just need to back up your data, DVD is very important and is something that modern society has grown defendant of, to the point of technological addiction. Many people are still confused on what is the best Blank DVD Media for each individual project. The key to know which Type of Blank Media to use is based on your knowledge of the different types of writable & readable DVD types.Terminology
As most of us have seen, the more technologies evolves the smaller the size that it becomes, it just tends to shrink and become more powerful. DVD-ROM & Blank Media DVD’s are an example of how far we’ve come from the days of VHS and Beta-Max for watching and copying video. The word DVD is an acronym for ‘Digital Versatile Disc’, and it’s main function is to store information. There are many different types of blank DVD formats that you can purchase, and often it becomes difficult to tell what the different terminology means. Unfortunately, you can only blame the marketers and manufacturers of the Blank DVD media for the ambiguity. There are too many different DVD terms that are not only bad for consumers, but also bad for the retailers who want consumers to be informed. But in a world where everything can be reduced to a 3 or 4 letter acronym, you kind of expect a little bit of ambiguity.
In an attempt to remove some of the ambiguity related to the different types of blank DVD types, I’ve put together a list that may help. Currently, there are a number of different DVD formats as follows:
- DVD-ROM (Read Only Memory). This is the industry way of telling you that it is a read only DVD, meaning that the data has already been copied onto the disk and you cannot write on to it. You cannot write onto a DVD-ROM.
- DVD+R or DVD-R. Blank DVD-R media can only be written on once and then it becomes a DVD-ROM. This type of Blank Media DVD is less expensive than the re-writable formats and best for one time copy projects, like movies.
- DVD-RW. This type of blank media DVD and be written onto numerous times. This is the best type of blank DVD media to use if you are planning to make backups over a period of time, but can be used like a DVD+R too.
- DVD+RW. This is the same as above and therefore creates confusion. Basically, just ignore the plus or hyphen as the both mean the same thing.
- DVD-RAM. Yet another example on how the industry has created confusion for the consumer. This type of DVD is the same as the about two.
- Blu-ray Disc. Blue-Ray DVD’s are currently the most advanced form of DVD available to the consumer. It’s claim to fame is the ginormous amount of information that it can store.
Although there is a lot more to blank dvd media, specifically when you get into storage capacity and single and dual layer dvd’s, the above information should help reduce some of the confusion. The next time you are shopping for blankĀ DVD media, you’ll be able to make a more educated purchase and it will help you with your next project.
