All of the hardware in your computer requires software drivers to make them work. A software driver, also known as a device driver is a computer program that allows hardware like your video card, sound card, Printer etc. to work correctly on your computer. Generally, software drivers communicate with the target hardware using the computer bus. Drivers are both hardware and Operating System specific and require an in-depth knowledge of the Operating System and Hardware to program correctly. An improperly programmed device or software driver can cause havoc on your Operating System, including freezes, crashes and worse. Fortunately, most device drivers are programmed by seasoned programmers who are experts in their field.
Generally, Windows does a very good job at installing the drivers necessary to run your hardware, but there are times where this isn’t the case, for that matter, Windows doesn’t upgrade your software drivers for you. There are a number of reasons why you should update your drivers, but whatever the case, you may be familiar with the difficulty in finding the correct ATI drivers, for example, it can be a real pain. If you’re running an older Operating System, like Windows 95, the issues gets compounded, remember the Blue Screen Of Death?
I prefer to use sites like driverssoftware.com to find the drivers I need, whether I’m looking for nvidia drivers, or a plethora of other hardware drivers, for me time is money. It all comes down to convenience, when you are looking for your software drivers, and getting what you need quick is vital to your productivity.
