GPS is a very important tool that has become a necessary part of modern living. You may have one in your vehicle right now that helps you find your destination with little or no hassle. There are great uses for GPS, like search and rescue for example, which is a valuable tool that can help save lives. But what happens when GPS becomes the enemy, helping others snoop into your life and invading your Privacy?
In the Corporate world, GPS Tracking has been used by companies to track important assets like vehicle fleets, packages as well as their employees. Most companies have full disclosure agreements with their employees where the employee is made fully aware that he or she may be tracked. But how many corporations out there are currently tracking their employees without this disclosure? Is this ethical?
One can argue that as long as an employee is on the payroll, he or she gives up their right of self-autonomy, but I disagree. Although I’m not a Lawyer, I feel that a person does not become property of their employer while at work, he or she is still governed by Federal and State Laws, and should be treated fairly within the framework of those laws. The way I see it, this means that its the employer’s duty to fully disclose all policies and practices to each and every employee, and then it’s the employees decision to either agree or disagree.
The problem is that, as GPS becomes more prominent in the corporate world, it’s only a matter of time before all company’s insist that many of their employees agree to be monitored. When we reach that point, people will feel that they have no choice but to give up their right to privacy, because the alternative is unemployment. This would be a most unfortunate path to take, because it would mean that people are now selling their right to privacy, often out of fear of unemployment. As GPS becomes more common in the Corporate world, there are many Privacy issues that need to be addressed and resolved.
