First Hard Disk Drive
While we’re on the subject of defragmenting and disk cleaning, I thought that showing you the first hard disk drive would be appropriate. The IBM 350 Disk Storage Unit, first introduced on September 4 1956, was the first storage device using disks instead of drums.
It’s fifty, 24-inch diameter disks could store a whopping five megabytes of data, equivalent to one average size MP3 file. This behemoth, with casing included, weighed in at about one ton and needed special handling. As you can see by the enclosed picture, it wasn’t the most travel friendly device around.
Although the IBM 350 Disk Storage Unit is a completely antiquated machine, it was at the time, one of the most advanced pieces of technology on the planet.
